Organisational cooperation

Villagers in Zambia

Zambia National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (ZNAPD) is FPD's Zambian sister organization.

The aim of FPD has been to support ZNAPD in a way that it could ease the everyday life of its members and increase possibilities to participate in the local society.

FPD has supported the members of ZNAPD in the following ways:

  • Support in organising into local groups
  • Training in skills needed in disability organization work
  • Promoting human rights and advocacy work

With the support of the FPD, ZNAPD has become one of Zambia's most remarkable human rights and civil organisations of people with disabilities. It has acitivities in most parts of the country. At the moment the FPD has two development cooperation projects with ZNAPD.

The Ngwena River Farming Project

The FPD carries out the project together with ZNAPD. The purpose of it is to start banana cultivation in Lufwanyama, in a remote rural area, and proceed to commercial cultivation.

The project aims at improving ZNAPD economy and food security of the villagers. It also employs local disabled villagers and contributes to their agricultural skills. The project has started in 2008.

Project manager Reuben Bukanga presents the ZNAPD Ngwena River Farming Project in Lufwanyama. The Finnish Association of People with Physical Disabilites is ZNAPD's partner in the project. The Communication and Resource Mobilization Project (CoRe)

The second project of FPD and ZNAPD develops ZNAPD as an organisation on three levels: national, provincial and branch levels during 2010–2012. The project is based on earlier similar projects.

On a national level the project improves ZNAPD central office's fundraising, communication and the personnel's computer skills.

On a provincial level ZNAPD founds branches in five provinces in Zambia.

On a branch level the local groups operating in villages get support to start small food security and income generating projects. Local groups will be trained in project initiating and coordinating. In 2010, overall 15 projects have been started in different parts of Zambia. The projects include for example bee keeping and piggery.

Talking photos

In 2012-2013 FPD coordinates Finnish Disability and Development Partnership's global education and communication project "Talking photos". The purpose of the project is to strenghten disabled people's positive self image with the help of photography in FPD and ZNAPD. The participants of the project are customers in FPD Validia-Service's Day Activity Centre in Tampere and ZNAPD members. As a result of the project will be organised a photo exhibition in 2013.
