The FMD's Lahti Rehabilitation Centre produces client-oriented quality rehabilitation services. These are the best way of supporting the disabled and their relatives to live as equal members of society, shaping their own lives and making their own choices.
The centre operates on the community principle. Clients and personnel meet daily for a community meeting to decide on matters relating to daily activity. Adaptation training is based on the support provided by a peer group.
Adaptation training helps clients to adapt to changes in their lives caused by disability. It consists of courses in comprehensive rehabilitation, which take the participants' physical, mental and social rehabilitation needs into account. Some courses focus on physical rehabilitation, when the clients receive tailored physical/occupational therapy. Other activity is carried out in a group.
The Centre arranges not only courses but also individualized rehabilitation and adaptation training. The Centre's Capability House has an equipment unit, a unit for minor disability groups, a peer counselling unit and a training unit.
The Centre's clients are disabled and multiple-handicapped people of all ages from all over Finland. The severely disabled are a core group of clients. A family-oriented approach to rehabilitation is an important facet of the work.
